Stevia and Monk Fruit: How We Sweeten Without Added Sugar

DailyMonk Kids and Plant Protein tubs with stevia leaves and monk fruit

Every DailyMonk tub is sweet enough to enjoy every day - and has 0 g added sugar. The sweetness comes from two plants: stevia and monk fruit. Here's why we chose them, and what we chose not to use.

The problem with "sweet" in protein powders

Look at the back of many protein and kids' nutrition drinks and you'll find sugar, jaggery, glucose or maltodextrin high up on the list. They make the product taste good, but they also add sugar and calories that you probably didn't buy a protein powder for.

Some brands go the other way and use artificial sweeteners like sucralose or aspartame. We wanted neither.

What is stevia?

Stevia comes from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, native to South America. The sweet compounds in the leaf, called steviol glycosides, are many times sweeter than sugar - so only a tiny amount is needed. They add sweetness without adding sugar.

What is monk fruit?

Monk fruit (luo han guo) is a small melon-like fruit that has been grown in southern China for centuries. Its sweetness comes from natural compounds called mogrosides. Like stevia, it is very sweet in small amounts and adds no sugar.

Why use both together?

On its own, stevia can leave a slight aftertaste. Monk fruit rounds it off. Together they give a cleaner, more balanced sweetness - which matters when you're having the same shake every morning.

How sweeteners compare

Maltodextrin : adds sugar - a fast-digesting carb
Refined sugar : adds sugar
Jaggery : adds sugar - still sugar
Dates / coconut sugar : adds sugar - natural, but still sugar
Stevia + monk fruit : 0 g added sugar

Where you'll find them

Every DailyMonk product - our adult Superfood Plant Protein and our Kids Protein - is sweetened only with stevia and monk fruit. You can check this yourself in the ingredients list on each product page and on the back of the tub.
